  1. I haven't seen the Charlie Rose episode, but I wouldn't read too much into this. I am a white female, and my dear departed dad was almost reflexively negative toward any music I listened to (as in Bruce Springsteen) or athlete I liked when I was growing up. He would call them names and tell me my favorite player had been traded overnight, etc. (which is why I didn't believe him initially when it actually happened!). I think fathers can sense when their daughters are becoming sexually aware, and it scares the crap out of them. I believe his greatest fear was that I would run off with a guy like Bruce Springsteen, or at least the prototypical protagonist from his songs (not a rich rock star). I think it's a stretch to make the race connection. Brooks is being an overprotective father; it's in his job description. Just my $0.02 as a daughter who has been there and rolled her eyes all the way.

Love the Jerome Simpson flip -- my favorite play of the year.
