Davey D Cook Interview On Oakland Anti Black Racism

Davey D Cook and I have been long-time friends going back to the days when he and I were students at Cal-Berkeley in 1986! (GO BEARS!). Since then, Davey has carved out a celebrity-level reputation as one of the few, true Hip Hop Bloggers and Journalists in the World. From his media perch, "Davey D" has watched not just the music industry change, but Oakland, his home, as well. Now, after a scary series of racist incidents (including a call to Oakland Police on black male drummers that drew an unbelievable 13 police cars and noise complaints against black churches) that would seem to run counter to Oakland's post-war socio-economic history and its reputation for not just diversity but racial integration, Davey and other Oaklanders have organized to stop it. In my 40-minute video interview, Davey D talks about these problems and gives us an oral history of how Oakland came to this sad place in its history, the responsibility of Oakland politicians from Jerry Brown to Libby Schaaf, and what to do about it. Davey D also destroys the idea that music and tech aren't connected and points to a number of Oakland musicians and Hip Hop artists who are also programmers and engineers. Also, Davey points to the failure of Oakland elected officials to build around the rich culture in the City, much in the way Atlanta has. I thank Davey D for his time.
